Like many people, I can’t seem to stick with one mascara. There are many that I like and go back to, but the allure of trying a new one always gets to me! In the mascara department, I usually prefer Maybelline. L’Oreal has been hit or miss for me. I love the Voluminous Million Lashes formula (awesome length), but the cult classic Voluminous Carbon Black is an absolute mess on me (raccoon eyes, big time). Telescopic Carbon Black is another formula that gives me raccoon eyes, so bad that I had to throw away the tube after only two applications. Even when I tried it on my top lashes only, I couldn’t make it work. Now I’m back to another mascara that I really like: Power Volume 24 Hour Black Smoke!
I was intrigued by this mascara because it has a matte finish rather than a glossy finish; I guess that is where the “smoke” comes in. The box claims that this mascara has a “smoky matte effect” and “collagen spheres and a semi-arched brush”. The brush has thick bristles and a slightly curved top that comes to a point. It looks a lot more arched on the package than it does out of the tube, which isn’t a big deal, but some may find it to be false advertising (what mascara doesn’t have false advertising though…) It is on the medium side of the size spectrum. Not as big as say, Benefit Bad Gal, but not as small as CoverGirl Lash Blast.
The formula and finish of this mascara are great! I LOVE the matte effect. It definitely gives my eyes a more smoky look, which isn’t overly dramatic, but dare I say “sexy” looking. The formula is wet, but it dries quickly. If you put many coats of mascara on, be careful with this one. Because it dries so quickly, it will be difficult to work with. I usually put one coat on, or two at the most.
My eyelashes are thick, heavy, and extremely straight. They have decent length; nothing that I can complain about. Because of this, I just can’t hold a curl whatsoever with any mascara, even waterproof. I usually look for mascaras that have lengthening properties. L’Oreal Black Smoke doesn’t make my eyelashes appear super long, but I do like the dramatic effect that it has, and it doesn’t BUDGE during the day. No raccoon eyes, and no flaking! All that and it’s easy to take off as well. What??? Since when does that happen?
My two favorite things about this mascara: staying power and the matte formula. At $8 at the drugstore, it is definitely worth a try, and something I will repurchase.
Have you tried this mascara? What do you think of it?
