Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation ($36) is a “shine controlling, oil-free, water-resistant, complete coverage liquid foundation.” I think this is a pretty accurate description. My shade is number 30 porcelain, which is for “medium skin with beige undertones”.
Although this is a matte finish foundation, it is not drying like matte foundations can be. The texture of the foundation is very, very soft and silky, which makes it easy to blend and build on the skin. I apply this foundation with a brush, usually the Sigma F80 flat top kabuki. Even though this can be built to full coverage, I would say one layer is medium coverage depending on your skin issues. While I don’t have any major skin issues, I always look for how well something covers the redness on my nose that I have in the morning from wearing glasses. This foundation does cover well, as I find that I don’t usually use an under eye concealer with this; I usually just dab a little of it under my eyes while applying the foundation.
Although this is matte, it doesn’t have that “flat” look when it is finished, and it doesn’t look dry. Instead, it just looks like smooth skin. My skin is combination; I tend to get a little bit of oil in the t-zone and with a powder to set it, this foundation looks great all day long (at least eight hours).
This foundation also has sixteen shade selections on Sephora.com, so it is likely that most people will be able to find a shade match. For me, this is one of the best shade matches I’ve ever had with a foundation.
- Good color selection
- Long wearing
- Soft and silky
- Easy to blend
- Buildable coverage
- Doesn’t look dry
- Expensive ($36 for 1.01 ounces)
Although pricey, I feel that the price is totally worth it. I would absolutely buy this again and again, and likely will. The weight is not “heavy”, but this is definitely a cool weather foundation for me; in the summer I prefer more lightweight and sheer formulas. Overall, this is definitely in my top foundations and of holy grail material!
