Lancome Hypnose Drama ($27) is a much hyped about mascara. It touts instant volume in its claims, as well as flake and clump free wear. I was so excited about trying this mascara, and was thrilled to get a sample of it after hearing about how amazing it is. Due to the brush shape this mascara takes some time to figure out for the best results.
Hypnôse Drama creates full body, high-volume lashes in a single stroke. The full contact brush, with its S-shaped curve, grasps and loads lashes for a fanned out, eye-popping, full body fringe. It works magic on tiny lashes. Even dramatizes corner lashes other brushes miss—or worse, mess.
The brush has a wide, flat appearance, but then it curves into a slight “S” shape.
There are many tutorials on YouTube that show how to use this mascara. Because of the brush shape and application, I don’t think this is “mascara for beginners”, but it is easy enough to learn. The idea is to take the flat part of the brush, sweep it up the lashes, and as you reach the top turn the wand to catch the slight “S”.
No mascara – natural lashes
I was not wowed by this mascara, but I don’t hate it either. I don’t think it gave me much “drama”, that’s for sure. It doesn’t clump and it doesn’t flake, which I would certainly hope for a $27 mascara! I also found that over time, the mascara did start to get clumpy on the brush and in the tube. Naturally this will happen as a mascara gets older, but this was just with a few uses. Due to the unique brush shape, it is a little “high maintenance” compared to say, plastic brushes like Cover Girl Lash Blast.
The MakeupAlley rating for this mascara is 3.2 out of 378 reviews, and a 46% repurchase rate, making the reviews just about split down the middle. I think this might be worth a shot for someone desperate for fuller, longer lashes, and doesn’t have a problem with a learning curve. For me, I just don’t need something like this. I am looking for length over volume and feel that I get more length out of combining drugstore mascaras or using a mascara primer.
Have you tried this mascara? What do you think of it?
