I was tagged by Tina to participate in the Lipstick Week tag. I won’t be posting all of these in a row, but rather sporadically throughout the next 2-3 weeks or so. This tag is pretty self explanatory: it’s all about lipsticks! I don’t have an exact outline of what posts I will be doing, so you’ll just have to be surprised! I will be tagging others in the last post.
For my first day, I decided to purchase two lipsticks from the drugstore in lines I’ve never tried before, and do a little battle post! Here’s what I chose:
Maybelline Super Stay 14-Hour Lipstick in Perpetual Peony
Covergirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Delight
I had high expectations for the Covergirl lipstick since they seem to get rave reviews. Delight is a deep, pink red. Not quite brick red; the shade reminds me of begonias. It also has some gold shimmer in it, which is gritty on both the lips and in the tube. I don’t like how this feels when it goes on.
As far as being a lipstick, this does not seem like a lipstick at all! It isn’t creamy, it’s incredibly sheer, and it looks and feels like a stain rather than a lipstick. The color is pretty, but the product itself is very slippery. The stain does last for a long time, and it looks like I’ve just eaten a popsicle once the initial color fades. For the price I paid ($5), there are better drugstore lippies, like the Kate line from Rimmel.
I do not detect a scent from this lipstick, and find the tubes incredibly bulky and ugly. You can see a pretty true color match on the bottom, which is nice. These lipsticks are sealed at the drugstore, and are regularly priced at $6 (I got mine on sale!).
Perpetual Peony from Maybelline is a cool-toned pink with a hint of lavender. This is a pretty unique lipstick for the drugstore, as it easily could fit into MAC’s lineup. It has a pleasant, fruity scent and simply glides onto the lips. It is opaque right away and doesn’t require much fuss to look good; incredibly pigmented!
This dries to a matte finish, and as the tube states it is long lasting. I’ve never tested the 14-hour claim and I don’t think I will be doing so. The packaging is cute and you can see the color of the lipstick, which is color coordinated on the packaging. I love the white caps and as a whole the tube is pretty sleek. These are around $8, depending where you shop.
One swipe of Perpetual Peony; several swipes of Delight
Although they have a mere $2 price difference, the Maybelline lipstick blows the Covergirl one out of the water. It has better opacity, performance, and is more comfortable to wear since there’s no grit. The Covergirl lipstick has some color, but it might be better suited for a teenager getting her first makeup since it is on the sheer side (even then, why pay $6 when Wet’ n’ Wild is so much better for $2?).
I am really excited about Perpetual Peony and see myself wearing this often, whereas I don’t think I will be purchasing any other lipsticks from the Covergirl line.
