Awhile ago, I received this sample packet of Clinique’s Stay Matte Oil-Free makeup in the shade 9 Neutral. Since I have only used Clinique’s skincare, I was excited to try out their makeup. I always think of my mom when I use anything from Clinique, since their products are a staple in her makeup drawer, including skin care items. I believe she wears, or used to wear, the Superbalanced foundation.
This foundation doesn’t make a lot of claims. The description simply states that it is “an oil-free makeup that helps you stay matte all day”, and it “has been tested for streaking and fading at 88°F with a constant 80% humidity”. It is also supposed to resist sweat.
My sample shade, 9 Neutral, is probably the shade I would purchase if I were to buy the full size product. There are twenty shades in the line, and this falls somewhere in the middle. The shade range is excellent, providing something for the very fair to very deep.
This product is easy to apply; I used a Beauty Blender sponge for application. It is also easy to build if you are looking for full coverage. This is not a full-coverage foundation, but sheer to medium. The finish isn’t completely matte. It is a similar finish to Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation. I like matte foundations like this because you can still wear matte powder on top and not look cakey or dead. I wouldn’t say it is as silky in finish as Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet+, but it is a satiny matte finish.
I think this is a great mid-range foundation. It is $23, which is not too much over drugstore prices, and the product performs well. I had no problems with wear, and it still looked good seven hours after application. It did not oxidize on me at all either!
Clinique, Boots No 7 Matte in Cool Ivory, MUFE Mat Velvet+ in 30, MAC Matchmaster in 2.0
Though this is not holy grail foundation for me, I still really like it and would recommend it to someone who isn’t looking for a lot full coverage, but wants something to freshen up with.
