It took me awhile to develop an opinion on Kat Von D’s setting spray, Lock ‘n’ Load. I am a fan of setting sprays. I don’t expect them to be miracle workers, but I do like them for prolonging the wear of my makeup and for eliminating any “powdery” look that might happen. My favorite setting spray is Urban Decay De-Slick (I also like All-Nighter), and keep a mini bottle of MAC Fix+ in my purse just to refresh my skin mid-day.
Lock ‘n’ Load is $24 for 3.4 ounces, MAC Fix+ is $21 for 3.4 ounces, and Urban Decay De-Slick is $29 for 4 ounces, so the price points and sizes are fairly similar.
Lock n’ Load is a weightless mist that locks down your look for up to 16-hours, so makeup stays rockin’ all day and night long. Its Climate Balancing Ingredients help prevent makeup melt-downs when it’s hot and protects against dehydration and cracking in the cold. Ideal for all skin types, it won’t leave your skin feeling sticky or tight. It also works to prevent blush, eyeshadow, or lip color from fading, sliding, caking, or becoming excessively shiny.
According to Kat Von D, “I’ve tried every setting spray and nothing has worked for me, so I’ve been working for the last two years to develop my Lock n’ Load setting mist. I need my makeup to stay locked down, on my terms. I spend long days working at my tattoo shop and heading out to events at night.”
Having experience with other setting sprays, this is my least favorite. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. For one, the “mist” isn’t as fine as UD or MAC, which can be a problem if you spray too close to your face.
I will use it up though, and actually used it on makeup on three bridesmaids and a bride (all my cousins!) in a wedding recently. It is very good at giving makeup a very natural look that isn’t powdery, which is where this product really shines, and I like it for that. Will I buy it again? Maybe, but I will probably continue to stick with Urban Decay.
