Fitness Friday: New Milestone + Detroit Marathon

Hello! What a week it has been…I mentioned in my Weekend Haul post earlier this week that I went to the Detroit Marathon last weekend. My sister-in-law ran the half-marathon and did an awesome job. I just happened to be in Detroit visiting a friend who was in town, and our hotel was right near the race. It all worked out perfectly.

I have to say that seeing the marathon in action was quite the experience for me. If I hadn’t started running, I know exactly how I would have felt being there: slow, sluggish, and embarrassed. I would have felt like a major loser. Now, I’m not saying that everyone has to run or people who don’t run should feel like losers, not even close! Running has just given me confidence that I desperately needed in my life.

Instead of watching the marathon and feeling bad about myself, I was watching runners and thinking “maybe that will be me someday”. Now, I have NO desire to run a marathon, but a half marathon? Maybe. 🙂 One of my favorite parts about the marathon was seeing all the different types of people there. All ages and sizes; it was definitely inspiring.

In other news this week, I reached a major milestone: I ran four miles! 🙂 This is a great step toward my 10K by my birthday goal. I felt great at the time, but definitely felt it the next day.

Tomorrow is my second 5K race. It is COLD in the morning here (low 30s now), but I should have the right gear and be just fine during the run. Even though I already completed a 5K last month, I am still really nervous! I don’t know the race route at all, but know that it is partially paved and part trail. Wish me luck!

luck wished! and congratulations on the milestone. i totally feel the same about marathons/half-marathons. completing a half is on my long-term to-do list…but kinda tucked away (because running 13 miles is still very daunting to me.) also, what gear do you recommend for colder weather. it’s getting shiver-y here in CT and i’m kinda at a loss. thanks.

Thank you!! 🙂 I agree, 13 miles is definitely daunting! Right now I’m wearing a thin pair of Manzella gloves, Danskin leggings (not the yoga ones!), a long-sleeved Nike PRO Dri-Fit shirt, and a t-shirt over that. I also wear a Bondi Band headband that keeps my ears warm. I usually wear this ensemble when it’s between 30 and 45 degrees. After 50 it’s too hot for the Nike shirt and I switch to a lighter weight. 🙂
