The Kat Von D Five Piece Brush Set ($55) is designed for “creating gorgeous eyes”. It comes with five different brushes: foundation, smudge brush, blending brush, angled eye shadow brush, and a concealer brush. That sounds more like an all-purpose brush kit rather than eye central, but that isn’t so important. I should also preface this review noting that I did not pay full price for this set. I actually found this marked down to $25 at Sephora, plus I had a $10 Groupon to use, so I didn’t pay anywhere near retail price for this- Just $20 since I paid $5 for the Groupon.
The case that this brush set comes in is beautiful. It is a matte vinyl finish with roses carved into it, and a magnetic clasp. The inside is velvet. The whole case feels very luxurious. That said, if you use the brushes, they have to be clean before you put them back into the case, because otherwise the product (like powder) will get the case dirty right away. Because of that, I don’t think this is the most travel friendly set. If I’m going out of town for the weekend, I’m not going to worry about cleaning my brushes.
The brushes themselves are well-made and very soft. They apply product nicely, but I don’t think this is the best arrangement of brush types. Instead of the angled eyebrow brush, I think this set would benefit from a flat eyeshadow brush that packs on product. I also think that if this was truly an eye kit, it would benefit from a small pencil brush for precision.
These brushes work well with the Kat Von D shadow line and other products. They wash well and don’t shed or bleed, so they are of good quality. They aren’t scratchy at all. I just think that the selection seems a bit random for an eye kit.
Overall, I like this kit. I wouldn’t pay $55 for it just because it isn’t very comprehensive as an eye kit. At the same time, I really like this set and find myself reaching for it often. The foundation brush is a great size and very versatile; it can be used for foundation, blush, contouring, and highlighting. I also love the smudge brush and think it is the best one in my brush collection.
