Ah, the Urban Decay Naked Smoky palette– I love this palette! Originally, I didn’t think I would purchase it. I don’t wear deep smoky eyes very often, and I thought this palette would be super similar to the others in the Naked line. I made a few trips to Ulta to swatch it and look at it in person, and ended up redeeming my points to get a small discount on it.
The palette is similar in packaging to the other Naked palettes; it has 12 shades and a large mirror, and it comes with a brush. I really like the brush in this palette, as it is excellent for crease work. That seems appropriate for a smoky palette, no? The case is hard plastic as opposed to metal in the Naked 2 and 3 palettes. I think I like the metal cases better, but this case is lighter.
The shadows themselves come in a variety of finishes, including shimmer, satin, and matte. The formula seems different than typical Urban Decay, but not in a bad way. It seems a little ‘stiffer’, but not hard. Each shade is very pigmented and applies well to the eyes. The glittery shades do have a little bit of fallout, which is pretty typical for Urban Decay glitter shades.
What surprised me about this palette is that it is a lot more versatile than I expected. I can still get natural looks with it, but I can also go deep and dark thanks to those rich shades in the middle. My favorite color in the palette is Whiskey (reddish matte brown). I have also found myself reaching for Dagger quite a bit, which is a bluish gray satin shade.
I’ve found myself reaching for this palette even more than I thought I would. When I use single shadows, like my L’Oreal Infallible shadows, I have been reaching for this palette in conjunction wit them. I’ve also used this palette for a more dramatic look that I wore to a wedding, but still wear it in daily use.
A big complaint of the Naked 3 palette is that the shades all look the same when applied to the lid. I’ve also seen some people state the same about this one. As someone who owns all of the previous Naked installments, I’m still glad that I have this one, as I find it different enough to warrant the purchase. It also made me branch out a bit with my eye looks!
Overall, I’m a big fan and can’t think of any cons with this palette. I do recommend looking at it in person to decide whether or not you will use it. That made all the difference in my purchase! 🙂
